Someone, anyone, please talk me out of this.
I know a lot of hate gets tossed towards this car but I drove it and I liked it. A lot. It's smooth and quiet. Going over rough railroad tracks is like running over a bug on the road. The interior is high quality and well put together. The back seat is fine for me and my needs. It handles better than the 13 model and it wasn't bad on the 13 model either. It's no sports car but it's competent. One problem, no manual. I can get a crazy good interest rate.
Interior.
Has anyone else bought one? Driven one? Thoughts? These are my pictures.

If you get one, the rest of us here will call you Malibu Barbie. Sorry, them's the rules.

Person that sits right next to me at work has a black one. Loves it. It's got plenty of get up and go with the turbo and I think it looks great with the black out tint they put on it (despite it being illegal).
It actually has my Milan V6 beat 0-60 by .7 of a second which I think a 6.2 time is pretty impressive for what this car is.
Sorry I'm not talking you out of it, seems like a nice car. Get the custom bow-ties to match your color scheme.

Personally I can't get over the looks. The previous model was much more attractive.

In my books, it will always lose the comparison to the Ford Fusion.

Crazy good interior? Possibly compared to the old Bu, but GM has this cool thing where their interiors only look good when comparing them to the old models of the same car. The Corvette is the perfect exaple of this, every new generation has a "revolutionary interior" compared to the outgoing model, but compared to other cars it is ho-hum.
Your best bet is to drive competitive cars. Have you been ina a Fusion? It is a very good car. Likewise for the Optima, Accord, and Sonata, but the Sonata styling isn't for everyone. Compare the Bu to its current competitors, and whatever you do, don't compare it to your old car.

I've been warned.

Get a Fusion instead, if this is what you're looking for.

It's got too many grilles.

Driven dozens of examples as part of my job working for a rental car company. Perhaps all I need to say is: I like the Chrysler 200 better than the Malibu.
I'd get a Fusion or wait for the new Impala.

Never said it had a crazy good interior. Said I could get a crazy good interest rate. I have been in other cars in the segment and I like the Malibu the best for my needs. The Fusion/Mazda 6 are close seconds but there are little things that Chevy does in their cars that I like better than the competition. Just a personal preference.

I would make the bow ties silver. Only way to go. The gold is a bit long in tooth now.

Sorry I'm dyslexic.
What does the Bu do better than Fusion/6 for you? I'm curious just in case I need to make recommendations to friends.
Have you compared the back seats in the cars? GM typically does poorly in interior space as repeatedly told to me by my management who are all former GM engineers.

Yep, the person with the black one here did carbon fiber ones, it's kind of meh but a hell of a lot better than the gold.
Don't forget to cross shop with the Fusion, it's fantastic.

The Accord exists and comes with a manual option as well as a v6 option. Beige or not...it's better than a Malibu. Also. Coupe version.

That's the thing. I don't need an Impala sized vehicle but I do like it a good bit better. The Malibu (Chevy's in general) have things in their interiors that I just prefer. Can't explain it, just miss them in other cars. The Fusion is nice, but not my favorite. Hate the rear end. The Mazda 6 is amazing and would be at the top of the list but no auto down on all windows? No lighted window switches on all switches? What is this, 1990? Just a nitpicky thing but it bothers me.

a FWD midsizer is exactly that. If you can get a good price do it, they are all about the same these days. Plus made in USA with high US content.

Can't afford it. Not even if I tried. I would have to sell my house, a kidney and my first born.

I agree that the previous generation had much better proportions but in person, the new one isn't bad. I feel similarly though and it's why I haven't pulled the trigger yet. That, and I love my Cruze.

Right until you get to the rear. Sorry, I just don't like how Ford did it. If I could get a Mazda 6 that had content like the Malibu (it's the little things) I would do that but I can't.

First time I looked at it all I could think of was a fish. It's grown on me quite a bit in person though.

Fusion is not for me. Just not my type of car. Looks great up front and has a great interior but I just don't like the rear.
![]() 10/08/2013 at 10:40 |
|
Yeah, I don't need that much rear room. It's better than my Cruze but not by a whole lot. Few inches. I don't typically carry many people if any. Chevy has auto down on all windows, highly configurable vehicle settings (I geek out over stuff like that) lighted switches and buttons everywhere, iPod connectivity that is so easy a cave man can do it. It's just little things that I like about it.

You're not talking me out of it. I appreciate the words though. Makes me feel better about possibly buying the most underrated midsized sedan out there.
![]() 10/08/2013 at 10:42 |

The proportions aren't bad; I'll give it that. My biggest gripes are the ugly-ass taillamps and the pseudo-haunches in the rear quarters. It just doesn't have the same flow as the last model. I can't quite put my fingers on it exactly, but for some reason the tails scream "'90s Lexus" to me.
![]() 10/08/2013 at 10:42 |

The only way I would buy an Accord Sport is sedan/manual. BUT they don't offer a tan interior in that trim level. I like tan interiors. A lot.

You're right, however, I would update the tails to the LTZ tails upon purchase. Trust me it does wonders. They should make them standard across the lineup.

Wrong, what you want is a Buick Regal, which the new Malibu is based off of.
![]() 10/08/2013 at 10:53 |
|
How the hell would you afford a 2014 Malibu, then? Financing and loans, I assume?
I suggest an older (3-4 years old) Cruze or Buick if you really like this car, since the Cruze is better (in my opinion) for the price, and the Buick is basically 99% of what the new Malibu is anyway.
![]() 10/08/2013 at 11:08 |

SS is over $40,000 the Malibu is significantly less at under $25,000. I have a 3 year old Cruze now and love it. Just looking for a possible change.

This. I do. You're right. In that color even. Ok, you've got me. Talked me out of it. Thanks! Except now you talked me into a Regal. Now I have to find one. Cars.com, here I come!
![]() 10/08/2013 at 11:11 |

I'm with you, the Fusion's rear unravels the whole car.
![]() 10/08/2013 at 11:11 |

If you love your Cruze, why not keep it and delay a new car purchase?
![]() 10/08/2013 at 11:18 |

Glad to know I am not alone. It's a great car, I just can't get past that.
![]() 10/08/2013 at 11:19 |

I do love my Cruze but I have car ADD. I can't stay in one for long. The book value on my Cruze is up in a big way lately and it would mean I could get out of it and not have any negative equity. In reality, even if I want the Malibu, I will likely wait until I can find a good used one with some miles on it.
![]() 10/08/2013 at 11:29 |

Get the Mazda 6 instead.
![]() 10/08/2013 at 11:39 |

I'm not sure about this, but is there a base version of the SS that will come out with a V6?
I'd assume at around $30K
![]() 10/08/2013 at 11:42 |

Not sure why I spaced over this option. Unquantified qualifies the situation; go for the Mazda 6!

Hasn't been announced yet but I guess anything is possible. Still too expensive for my tastes. Maybe if they do, I can get one used in a few years?
![]() 10/08/2013 at 12:51 |

Do want. There are just things about the Mazda I don't like. I like lighter interiors and only the seats and door inserts are available in lighter colors on the 6. It does drive incredibly well though.

One question, how important is a manual transmission to you? Several years ago I was looking for a car and drove my mother's Impala SS for a week. At first the 300hp was nice, but I couldn't stand the automatic.
![]() 10/08/2013 at 13:29 |
|
I care less about power and more about driver engagement. The manual is pretty important. I am looking at used Buick Regal turbo's right now. Got one in the area that is listed at 22,000 with only 11,000 miles on it. Really, I am not sure. Now that I am not driving 100 miles per day for work the manual is a great thing to have but an auto wouldn't kill me either.

True.
